Total units required
27 units (24 units for second majors). Of these 27 units, three may be taken outside of the Italian (L36) with the approval of the major advisor.
Required courses (in Italian)
- Italian 307. Grammar and Composition I (3 units)
- Italian 308. Grammar and Composition II (3 units)
- Two of the following courses (6 units)
- Italian 323. Italian Literature I.
- Italian 324. Italian Literature II.
- Italian 327. History of the Italian Language.
- Two Italian 400-level seminars (6 units)
Students must maintain an average of B- or better and must maintain a B or better in Italian. Courses taken Credit/No Credit do not count toward the Italian major.
You are strongly encouraged to participate in a study abroad program. Our 6-week summer program is in Castelraimondo in the Marche region. Our semester abroad program is affiliated with Boston University’s Centro in Padua. These programs are considered in residence.
You are encouraged to work toward Latin Honors (cum laude, magna, summa). To qualify for Latin Honors in the major by thesis, you must complete special literary research and prepare and orally defend an Honors thesis, which is judged by an Honors faculty committee. To qualify for Latin Honors by course work, you must enroll in 1. Italian 4951 (Senior Honors, fall of the senior year); 2. Italian 495 (Senior Honors, spring of the senior year). Recommendations for Honors are based on your performance and the quality of the thesis, plus your cumulative grade point average. 18 of the 27 units required for the major must be taken in residence. Non-WUSTL courses may count toward the major only with departmental permission.
