The following guidelines are departmental policies regarding placement of students in Spanish after summer study abroad in Madrid, Quito, and Puebla.

Madrid and Quito Summer Abroad Programs

1. Given that no student can proficiency out of Spanish 308 based on a summer study abroad program, students participating in the Madrid and Quito summer abroad programs will receive 300-level elective credits applicable toward the Spanish major and minor for successful completion of courses during summer study abroad

Puebla Summer Abroad Program

1. Students in the summer abroad program in Puebla can proficiency out of one level of Spanish (101, 102, 201, or 307, but again, not 308) based on the results of a proficiency exam administered by the coordinator of the course level in question (e.g., the Coordinator of Spanish 201 administers the proficiency to any student wishing to proficiency out of Spanish 201 after summer study abroad). The coordinator for the level in question will administer a proficiency exam to determine whether the student has attained the level needed by administering a proficiency exam, which may include a written exam, a diagnostic essay, oral interview, and/or any other measure that the coordinator requires to make the determination. For example, a student who goes to Puebla having taken Spanish 201 can proficiency out of Spanish 307 only if the coordinator of Spanish 307 determines that the student has achieved the appropriate level to do so based on the proficiency exam.
2. All Puebla program students who want to attempt to proficiency out of one level of Spanish need to sign up ahead of time and complete the proficiency exam on the Monday before the Wednesday of the first day of class of the fall semester. The results of the proficiency exam will be turned in to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Spanish, who in turn will forward the results to Amy Suelzer, Assistant Director of International and Area Studies.
3. Results of the proficiency exam will be emailed to the students by 8 pm on the Tuesday after the day of the proficiency exam so that the student may attend the appropriate course level on the first day of class on Wednesday.
4. When applying to semester and year study abroad programs in Spain and Chile, students are not permitted to use anticipated placement results based on upcoming summer study abroad in lieu of prerequisite courses required for these semester and year programs.
5. As always, students who proficiency out of Spanish 307 (either via the placement exam or the proficiency exam after summer study abroad) are still responsible for completing the three upper-level (300- or 400-level) Spanish units that they would have earned if they had taken Spanish 307.
