Information for Prospective Applicants

Program Highlights

  • Possibility of acquiring a Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies or a Graduate Certificate in Language Instruction while pursuing the Ph.D. in Spanish;
  • Comprehensive Language Teaching Development Program, which includes: language teaching orientation; Graduate Seminar in Language Teaching Methodology; supervised language teaching at various levels; advanced teaching practice using the most current technological resources; Language Learning Colloquium Speaker Series.
  • Teaching load for teaching assistants is never more than one course per semester.

Financial Support

  • Six years of funding; the last (6th) year support is in form of a full-year dissertation fellowship (no teaching duties).
  • Currently all graduate students in the department receive financial support in the form of renewable teaching assistantships or fellowships, each carrying stipends of approximately $17,940 (2009-2010) and full tuition scholarship.
  • Qualified candidates can compete for multi-year graduate fellowships awarded by the Graduate School: Olin Graduate Fellowship for Women and the Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship for African-Americans.
  • Full one-semester fellowships (no teaching responsibilities) are granted to all new students in one of the first 2 semesters of study.
  • Additional sources of funding: competitive teaching assistantships in the Summer Language Institute in Madrid; editorial assistantship with Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, major refereed journal published in the Department.

Additional Resources

  • Various awards to enhance students’ professional development (Dean of the Graduate School’s Graduate Teaching Award; the Helen Fé Jones Award for first-year teaching assistant in Spanish; The Eva Sichel Memorial Essay Prize).
  • A series of optional workshops on topics such as academic essay writing and publishing, job interviews, conference paper preparation and delivery;
  • Funding available to doctoral candidates for travel to professional conferences.
  • Endowed distinguished visiting professorship in Spanish American Literature (most recently held by Antonio Skármeta and Diamela Eltit); endowed funds to host a yearly week-long seminar with a distinguished critic or writer (in Spanish, Spanish American and/or French literatures and cultures).
