Lynne Breakstone earned her PhD from Northwestern University and has been teaching in the Romance Languages Department since 1980. Having lived in France for one year as an undergraduate with Washington University's first Junior-Year-Abroad in France program, she is strongly committed to supporting students who wish to have the transformative experience of studying in a non-anglophone country. She serves as coordinator of the French 308 sequence, for which she has written a composition manual. Since 2002, she has been directing the Summer Language Institute in France; in those years some ninety WU students have learned to know and appreciate the Loire Valley region around Amboise and have dramatically improved their French language skills.
