The Department of Romance Languages & Literatures prides itself in its warm and friendly atmosphere, one in which regular, informal interaction between faculty and students on academic and professional subjects is encouraged. In and out of classes, professors try to create an open as well as supportive environment for the development of graduate students in diverse fields. The Department offers graduate programs in Spanish toward the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.
Programs are unusually flexible and can be modified to accommodate individual needs. Only two courses are required of all graduate students: a instructional methods seminar (to be taken during a student's first appointment as a Teaching Assistant in the department) and a seminar in literary theory and research methodology. Graduate students are also subject to all the general requirements (e.g., a Ph.D. language requirement) of the Department and Graduate School; for the latter, consult the Graduate Catalogue.
The Director of Graduate Studies should be contacted for questions regarding advising and curricular matters, including PhD Exams. Prospective candidates should contact the Director of Graduate Admissions for general information on the graduate program and for questions about the admissions process.
