Hispanic Studies Graduate Program

To be considered for admission to our Spanish doctoral program you will need to submit the following application materials. The online application and all supporting materials for Fall admission must be received by December 4th preceding that fall.

  • Apply to the Office of Graduate Studies
  • Statement of Purpose. This statement allows you to elaborate on your educational background and the experiences that have led you to pursue a PhD, to explain your potential areas of research interest and how our program aligns with these, and what your goals are with the PhD in Hispanic Studies.
  • Writing sample (of around 20 pages; this could be a final essay for a course, a chapter from an honors or master’s thesis, or a published article) 
  • Three letters of recommendation. See Guidelines for Recommenders.
  • Certified copies of transcripts. *Transcripts and recommendation letters written in a language other than English must be translated into English by a certified translator.
  • TOEFL (for applicants whose native language is not English). See the Office of Graduate Studies application page for more on the TOEFL.
  • Supporting materials such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, and writing samples can all be uploaded through the application portal.
  • Note: We do not use the GRE in our evaluation of applications.
