The Department of Romance Languages & Literatures (RLL) and the American Culture Studies Program (AMCS) at Washington University in St. Louis invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Latinx Studies to begin in the fall semester of 2025. This joint position is home-based in Romance Languages & Literatures (75%) with a secondary appointment in American Culture Studies (25%).
We seek an exceptional scholar whose approach to Latinx Studies would become central to the future at Washington University of both Hispanic Studies, and American Studies, two disciplines that are increasingly organized according to transnational and hemispheric perspectives rather than national or regional literatures and cultures.
A Ph.D. with an emphasis on research related to Latinx Studies is required at the time of appointment. Within the field of Latinx Studies, we welcome applications from scholars with forward-looking research agendas and whose work engages different methodologies and critical approaches, particularly those in dialogue with comparative and critical ethnic studies.
Responsibilities include conducting and publishing scholarly research; developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; advising and mentoring a diverse student body; and other duties assigned by the University. The teaching load is two (2) courses per semester. Candidates should have completed a PhD with a research focus on Latinx Studies no later than 30 June 2025. Candidates are welcome, though not required, to teach and publish in Spanish, Portuguese, or Indigenous languages related to Latinx Studies.
RLL and AMCS comprise a vibrant community of scholars whose research and teaching are at the forefront of advancing the humanities at the University. Colleagues in both units collaborate with interdisciplinary departments and programs such as Latin American Studies, Global Studies, African and African-American Studies, Comparative Literature, and Film and Media Studies, as well as other departments and research centers across the University, to carry out innovative research and teaching projects. This new tenure-track position aligns with Washington University’s commitment to build a world-class research program on race and ethnicity. Moreover, the new colleague will be eligible for substantive research support from the Center for the Humanities and the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity.
