This course is a project-based, language learning class with overarching themes that vary semester to semester. The focus is interpersonal and presentational communication, cultural understanding and comparison, and community building inside and outside the classroom. The theme this semester is La Dolce Vita: Italian Culture and the Colors of Italy. We will examine various aspects of diverse contemporary Italian culture in its sociolinguistic, artistic, and historical context. Topics to be explored via excerpts from major writers, articles, music, art, blogs, etc., include mental illness; racism; love and pleasure; humor; and political activism. This course aims for students to gain a higher level of oral proficiency and intercultural communicative competence. In Italian. No final. 3 units.
