Chef Pierre Santer Joins WashU's Spring French Cuisine and Culture Class

On Monday, April 29 - three days before finals began- students from Professor Allen's French cuisine and culture class were given the opportunity to learn how to make simple but elegant dishes with the help of a French chef living in St. Louis.

Chef Pierre Santer, who works at Bellerive Country Club, gave the students, along with some of their French-speaking friends, several mini-classes on desserts, sauces, and vegetable preparation... and then put it all together into a delicious small meal !

On the menu for the students' study-break gala:  asparagus and vinaigrette, salmon en papillotte, and a delicious mousse au chocolat that was richer and less sweet than what students were used to.

The food seemed to taste all the better for having been made together, and students were able to return to their dorms and desks well-fed, refreshed, and inspired... perhaps with new ideas for their own final cooking shows, which will include a Vietnamese spring roll competition, an elegant, over-21 drinks and desserts show, and a group called "les pommes" who will do a French-style potato cook-off.

Creativity, culture, and cuisine came together in a wonderful stress-busting event, and "Chef Pierre" most definitely garnered the full three Michelin stars from our enthusiastic WU students.

Thanks also to Lionel Cuille and the French Connexion cultural center for making the connection, and for sponsoring this event.
