French Students Immersed in Everyday Life of Franco-Québecois Settlers

Transporting us back in time to Missouri’s 18th-century French-speaking settlements, last Saturday’s pedagogical trip to Ste. Genevieve was a great experience for our WashU students. Hosted by The Centre for French Colonial Life and sponsored by French Connexions and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) at Washington University, the day was filled with interpretive presentations and hands-on learning experiences. From exploring the architectural practices of the era to indulging in 18th-century-style cake-making demonstrations, students were immersed in the everyday life of Franco-québecois settlers. Students embarked on guided tours of historic homes, engaged with living history specialists, and delved into discussions on colonial-era agriculture and gardening practices. Captivated by the rich heritage and cultural tapestry of French Creole traditions, students and their professors all enriched their understanding of history by discovering the vibrant legacy of colonial Ste. Genevieve.
