What can psycholinguistic research tell us
about second language learning and teaching?
Research examining language processing among multilinguals allows us to better understand how they learn their second language(s). Behavioural, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging measures—and their advantages and disadvantages—are discussed to develop an understanding of ecological validity in current and future research on second language acquisition and multilingualism. These methods reveal many findings, among which are that learners cannot turn off their L1, and not all learners process language the same. In the context of these findings, implications for language teaching and learning are discussed.
