Info session: PreMed Career Conversations: French Studies Path to Medicine

Panel event open to all majors! WashU alumni and professionals who are now MDs will share how a double major or minor in French studies is an asset when looking for a career in medicine. Panelists will share their experiences regarding studying abroad, career exploration and choice, and how the French language has been an asset to their life and career.

Ian S. Hagemann

Ian S. Hagemann, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Pathology & Immunology and of Obstetrics & Gynecology, with special interests in gynecologic, breast and molecular pathology. He grew up in northern Virginia and in Paris, France, and earned his undergraduate degree at Princeton. He has had several roles at Washington University: MSTP student, clinical fellow, faculty member, and Assistant Dean for Admissions. His primary clinical activity is as a surgical pathologist. At the School of Medicine, he leads the Genetics and Genomics Thread in the Gateway Curriculum, and is the director of the Gynecologic and Breast Pathology Fellowship program. His research interests are in gynecologic cancers and in the implementation of next-generation sequencing for clinical diagnostics. Medical students at Washington University and pathology residents at the University of Pennsylvania have selected him for several teaching awards. 

Caline Mattar

Caline Mattar, MD. Dr. Mattar is co-director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. Dr. Mattar’s interests are in antimicrobial resistance and infection prevention in resource limited settings, global and international health, infectious diseases in pregnancy, currently COVID-19. 

Priscilla Cruz. Priscilla is a second-year medical student at Washington University School of Medicine. She graduated from Cornell University in 2021 with a BA in Biology, Chemistry, and French. Among other current involvements, she is also one of the co-leads for the Medical French student group on the medical campus. She intends to pursue a Masters in Public Health dual degree during her time in medical school. Priscilla is currently participating in research on antimicrobial resistance and infection prevention in hospitals and hopes to pursue a career in infectious disease.
