Literature and Fascism

ITALIAN 442

The year 1922, when Benito Mussolini became Prime Minister, marks the official beginning of the fascist regime in Italy. A hundred years have passed since then, but the legacy of fascism and of the antifascist movement is still present in Italy and in other countries today. In this course, we will learn about the rise of the fascist dictatorship, its end, and the role of the Resistance movement, while focusing on the recent cultural and political debates that enflame contemporary Italy over the legacy of the regime and the rise of right-wing populist movements. Through the analysis of different genre and media (excerpts of personal memoires, graphic novels, films, visual arts, architecture, songs, and social media), students will embark on a journey of exploration of Italy's past, present, and future, and of the complex memories of fascism that exist within the Italian collective consciousness. The course is taught in Italian. Prereq. Italian 307 or 309, or permission of the instructor.
