This graduate seminar offers a theoretical and methodological introduction to the study of culture from the perspective of media studies. We will take an interdisciplinary approach that combines media theory, philosophy, Marxism, and sociology to study the material organization of culture and its role in Latin American cultural formations during the twentieth century. In addition, we will discuss the forms of the popular and the political and intellectual debates that emerged within each media space. We will study print, sound, and aural media and explore cases from Latin American geographies, paying particular attention to the Andean region.
