Topics I: In Persepctive

FRENCH 321

Recipes are not just for cooking. We talk about recipes for success to emphasize a high probability of achieving a goal, and recipes for disaster when actions are predicted to fail. Our class will consider how writers, artists, architects, museum curators, and filmmakers offer recipes for life. Using models from the past through the present, we will explore how to: understand the language of love; flatter the boss (Louis XIV and contemporary leaders); design a home (from the 18th century through today); play with toys (Baudelaire to Barbie); collect precious things (souvenirs and art); discover the secret of a French madeleine (Proust); survive a devastating illness (film, LE SCAPHANDRE [diving bell] ET LE PAPILLON; cope with issues of inheritance (film, L'HEURE D'ETE); capture the modern city (photography); and build a better mousetrap (students' final project "Sustaining the City"). Prereq: Fr 307D. Priority will be given to students who have not yet taken an In-Perspective course.
